Jacob was raised in a strict upper-middle class Jewish family. His father was a doctor, his mother a school teacher, and he was the middle child of three brothers. There was little room for misbehaviour around his parents -- his father was especially strict and unyielding on the practice of Jewish scruples, while his mother was, despite being outwardly warm and pleasant, a rather cold and calculating woman. There was little room for failure, little room for mistakes and a very high expectation placed upon the children of the Wilson family to succeed and conform to the American-Jewish way of life.

Jacob is the eldest of the three Wilson brothers, at age 40. He is a sucessful lawyer, who remained in his home town, close to his family. He blames himself for Josh's disappearance, and the guilt of that experience controls much of his personal life.
